Plant Closings
Alamac Knits Inc. is closing plants in two towns in North Carolina, eliminating about 1,000 jobs. Alamac's parent company, the Dyersburg Corporation of Charlotte, N.C., said Wednesday that increased foreign competition contributed to the closings. The move will result in the loss of about 720 jobs in Lumberton, N.C., and 280 in Elizabethtown, N.C. The company plans to consolidate all knitting operations in Clinton, N.C. Dyeing and finishing operations will be moved to Dyersburg, Tenn. Dyersburg is one of the largest manufacturers of fleece, jersey and stretch knit fabrics. --New York Times, May 18, 2001
