NTA and AATCC Members Prepare
for
“Surviving in the Competitive MArketplace”
Over 150 textile industry leaders and innovators gathered in North Conway, NH at the Red Jacket Mountain View from May 30 through June 1 to learn about “Surviving in the Competitive Marketplace.” Innovations in processing of wool and other fibers were presented at this three-day forum. For the first time ever, the Northern Textile Association (NTA), which for the past 15 years has organized a spring technical seminar, and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) jointly presented this technical program for the textile industry. AATCC for the past 32 years has held a New England regional technical conference.
Attendees came from 14 states and Canadian provinces and represented all sectors of the textile industry: yarn spinners, weaving and knitting mills, flocking operations, dyers and finishers, printers, and materials and machinery suppliers, and consultants to the textile industry.

The Wool Manufacturers Council, a division of the Northern Textile
Association, held its spring meeting in conjunction with the technical
seminar. The wool producers received
updates on recent developments in international trade, product labeling, and
environmental issues.
Dr. Patricia Helms of the University
of Rhode Island gave an update on the activities of NTA’s export trading
company, to which she is an advisor.
On Friday, May 31, participants had their choice of three technical sessions presented in the morning. Amit Trehan, of Malden Mills, Industries, moderated the Printing presentation where Barry Shay, Zeneca Colours, and Art Allen, BASF Corp. spoke about developments in textile printers and the printing process. The session on Wet Finishing was moderated by Randy Yorsten of Bercen Chemical Co. R. Carl Freeman, Woodbury Textile Services; Peter Lee, Zeneca Chemicals; and Stephen Guy, Freedom Textile Chemical Co. were the speakers. Mark Smith, Karl Mayer TextilemachineFabrik GmbH; Jim Stancil, Symtech Inc.; and Manfred Bollen, Benninger Machinery Co. spoke on Yarn Preparation in a session moderated by Paul Paydos. At Guilford of Maine, Inc. Paydos has overseen the construction of a new yarn-making mill over the past year.
The morning program continued with a session on Mechanical Finishing, moderated by Lewis Crothers of L.W. Packard & Co., Inc., with presentations by Allan Goldberg, Mario Crosta USA; Dario Forte and Francesco Gallazzi, Mario Crosta s.r.l.; and Richard Walton, Micrex Corp. Moderator Jay Jerue of Energy Consulting Engineers Inc. led the session on Forensic Matters: Settlement of Claims. Speakers were: John Fieldsteel, Esq., Hovey, Urbelis, Fieldsteel & Bailin; Karl Spilhaus, Cashmere & Camel Hair Manufacturers Institute;

and Sam Brickle, Hyman Brickle & Son. Mr. Brickle is currently serving as Chairman of the International Wool Textile Organization (IWTO) Arbitration Committee; he is the first American to serve as a IWTO committee chairman.
The luncheon program
featured Steven B. Warner professor
and Chair, Textile Sciences, Univ. of Mass-Dartmouth. Dr. Warner presented an interesting and informative slide talk on
“Biomimicking: The Mystery of A Spider’s Silk.”
The afternoon program offered participants a session on Dyeing moderated by Dawn Wyatt of The Worcester Company, with materials presented by Ralph Besnoy, Zeneca Colours; and Sue Wagner, Ciba-Geigy. Gene Park of the University of Rhode Island moderated the session on Process Controls. Speakers were: Don Nester, Hoescht Celanese; Mark Berchem, DaVinci Group; and Hank Bariexca, Ciba-Geigy.
Friday’s program concluded with cocktails followed by a Country and Western buffet.
The technical program continued with a session Saturday morning on Product Stewardship, moderated by Carl Fortin of Clariant Chemical Co.. The speaker was Janice Warnquist, Crompton & Knowles.
Other Saturday activities included a Fabric Swap and Golf Tournament. Following the luncheon buffet, attendees could enjoy the Scenic Mountain Railway Trip or a Tennis Tournament
The Awards Banquet Dinner was held Saturday night and was followed by a Dance Party.
