RETURN TO NTA MEDALS AND AWARDS

The NTA Bronze Medal

Also Known as the Student Honor Medal
The Association has, since 1901, awarded an honor medal for scholarship in several textile schools and colledge that meet the required standards. These awards were made possible through the interest of Moses Pierce, a successful cotton manufacturer, who, on the occassion of his 90th birthday in 1900, gave to the Association a fund to be used in furthering textile education.

Mr. Pierce began work in a cotton mill at the age of twelve years, and because of his own lack of opportunity to secure an education became greatly interested in the training offered others at textile schools.

During his lifetime Mr. Pierce was connected with several successful mills, and he was one of the founders of the Ponemah Mills at Taftville, Connecticut.

Since 1901 the Medal has been awarded every year but one, 2007. Under the current conditions of the award, it is given annually to the top student in textile sciences at the Unversity of Massachusetts - Dartmouth.

Recipients

The Study Medals has been, through 2008, awarded to 433 men and women. Noteworthy recipients include Gordon Osborne who was given the Student Medal in 1928, the Silver Medal in 1979, and the Gold Medal in 1994, making him the only triple-medalist in NTA history. Kenneth D. Langley, a 1964 recieptient, is a noted textile sciences educator and researcher at the University of Massachusetts where he has administered that school's NTA Student Medal Program since at least 1977.
