HistoryAt the 148th Annual Meeting, September 22-24, 2002, where the Northern Textile Association and the Knitted Textile Association merged to form the NATIONAL TEXTILE ASSOCIATION, the NTA Knitters and Finishers Group met on September 23, 2002, with the NTA Board of Goverment members present; at that meeting the Government Contracting Subcommittee of the Technical Committee was formed. This action was reaffirmed by the Board of Government at their October 29, 2002, meeting in New York City.The charge of the group was: The Government Contracting Subcommittee will advise the NTA staff on setting up a textile industry trade show, probably held in Philadelphia, directed to U.S. government contracting, similar to the Canadian government contracting show that the Canadian Textiles Institute organizes. On January 9, 2004, NTA announced that Hardy Poole, former Vice President, Product Services and Corporate Secretary of the American Textile Manufacturers Institute had joined the organization to provide support to the NTA membership on state and federal regulatory issues, defense procurement and consumer affairs. At the January 21, 2004, meeting of the Board of Government of NTA, Merritt Loring was added the Government Contracting Committee and named Committee chairman Through the spring and summer of 2004 the committee reformatted with a focus on military business. At the September 19,2004, meeting of the Board of Government of NTA, it was announced that Bob Goulet of Milliken and Company had agreed to chair the committee. For a time the group was known as the Government Procurement Committee (see Board of Government minutes of January 18, 2005) before settling on the name Government Textiles Committee American textile industry executives met April 26, 2005, in Charlotte, North Carolina with senior officials from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) for a briefing on government procurement of textile, clothing and individual equipment items. The program was sponsored by the National Textile Association (NTA). Approximately 50 NTA members attended the briefing session, which was sponsored by the association’s Government Textiles Committee. The program included presentations by senior officials from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and the Defense Logistics Agency’s central procurement facility, Defense Supply Center Philadelphia. The NTA committee serves as the textile industry’s spokesman with DoD clothing and textile issues, and works cooperatively with DoD agencies on textile items, supply issues and the overall procurement process. On June 3, 2005, Dan Pezold of Duro Textiles LLC became chairman of the Government Textiles Committee upon Bob Goulet's departure from the primary textile industry to work at the National Institute of the Severely Handicapped. On October 23, 2007, at the 153rd Annual Meeting of NTA Bruce LaFlam of Milliken and Company became chairman of the Government Textiles Committee and Dan Pezold of Duro Textiles LLC was presented with a plaque in Recognition of Outstanding and Dedicated Service to the National Textile Association and the Men and Women of our Military Services as Chairman, Government Textile Committee. |
